My "songs of the week" will be devoted to Billy Joel. I saw a tribute concert in my home city this past week and I remembered how many classics he had. Some of my favorites were omitted but overall it was a very good show.

Here's my favorite Billy Joel songs... I'll just say Piano Man & Uptown Girl are not amongst my favorites. Yes, they're definitely classics and I understand why they're popular but I think they're a bit overplayed.

Prelude / Angry Young Man from Streetlife Serenade

I love the energy of this song. I think it's the perfect concert opener.

Allentown from The Nylon Curtain

I love the story behind this song about people who stayed in Allentown despite the fall of the steel industry. Very sharp lyrics in this one.

Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got

They threw an American flag in our face

Just the Way You Are from The Stranger

I always get swept up by this song. It's so romantic and slickly produced and the epic saxophone solo at the end is the icing on the cake.

My Life from 52nd Street

Another great story song performed with gusto.

Tell Her About It from An Innocent Man

Billy went for a 60's throwback sound on this album and I think he nailed it, especially on this song.

We Didn't Start the Fire from Storm Front

There's a part of me that doesn't want to like this song because the verses seem like just jumbled up words but it's undeniably driving.

The River of Dreams

Billy gave us one last classic in 1993 and called it a day. I love the huge R&B production on this song and this might be my favorite vocal performance of Billy's. I especially like how he sang the bridge.

I'm not sure about a life after this

God knows I've never been a spiritual man

Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river

That runs to the promised land...

Billy did release a new song last year called Turn the Lights Back On. I wouldn't call it a classic but it was very nice. Hopefully, the lights aren't off for good.
