Director Baz Luhrmann crafted a new biography/concert film of Elvis Presley from interviews, home movies and unreleased/alternative footage from previous films Elvis: That's the Way it Is & Elvis on Tour .   A movie so nice, I saw it twice. If you're a longtime viewer of this blog, you may have noticed that I am a fan of Elvis. (See Screencap Recap #45 & #66 .)  Of course, I was excited about the prospect of a new Elvis concert film when I heard about it several months ago. Fast forward to February 21st: It was a cold day in Boston (around 30F or -1C) and I was feeling sorry for myself because a plan I had hoped for had fallen through. I decided I didn't have much to do, so I might as well check out this new Elvis movie. The music was loud and clear, like seeing Elvis in person. Zak, a man with Down Syndrome (Zach Gottsagen) escapes his assisted living home with ambitions of becoming a pro wrestler. Zak links up with Tyler, a fisherman on the run (Shia LaBeouf) and they travel together towards the wrestling school. Meanwhile, Zak is being pursued by his caretaker Elanor (Dakota Johnson), while Tyler is being pursued by his rival fishermen. Can Zak and Tyler break away from their past? With no expectations I watched this and was pleasantly surprised by how charming and well executed it was. The script is a little suspect at times, but full credit to the actors who all give it their best. Even the supporting cast is strong, particularly Bruce Dern and Thomas Hayden Church. In my opinion, there's a lot to like about The Iron Claw.  I t's has an appealing cast, it's well shot, the production design is nice and authentic looking... Yet, I don't think it all quite jells together. It's a good effort, but not a classic. Left to Right: Harris Dickinson as David, Zac Efron as Kevin, Stanley Simons as Mike & Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich. The real Von Erich's - David, Mike, Kevin & Kerry  I feel the trailer was slightly misleading. It seemed like wrestling was front and center, when in fact it was more of a family drama with a little bit of wrestling. To me, the editing was the biggest issue. In the beginning the pace was a little sluggish but then towards the end, all of the tragedies were compressed together. I think the story would've worked better as a mini series, that way the characters and events could've been fleshed out a lot more. To sum it up quickly, Freddy Kruger is killing the children of the people who burned him alive in their dreams. If you stay awake, you stay alive. Unfortunately, we all need to sleep. Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) calls Glen (Johnny Depp) and stresses that he needs to stay awake. The idea is that Nancy wants to go sleep and trap Freddy in the dream world and take him into the real world. Once Freddy is in the real world, he'll be powerless and open to defeat.
