Photo of the Day / Favorite Wrestling Books

Sean Maygers vs Aaron Perez from Muscleboy Wrestling

Catalogs 9 and 10 from Muscleboy Wrestling are on sale this weekend. Sean vs Aaron, pictured above is part of the sale.

There's many books about pro wrestling that have come out over the years. Here's some of my favorites.

1. Have a Nice Day! - Mick Foley

Mick tells his story from his days as a wrestling fan to his WWF title win over The Rock in 1998. Mick's style is very relatable. It's written as if he's telling you his story over drinks. The book looks massive but it is a fun and easy read. The sequel, Foley Is Good is also worth checking out. His other books are not as compelling.

2. A Lions Tale - Chris Jericho

Chris tells his story from his early years to his WWF debut in 1999. Like Mick, Chris has a distinctive and engaging style and he had an interesting career before joining the WWF. Some people say the humor is a bit cheesy, but I think that's part of its charm.  I was disappointed with the follow up Undisputed, so I haven't checked out his other books.

3. Pure Dynamite - Tom "Dynamite Kid" Billington

Dynamite also has an interesting story. From growing up in working class England to his days in Japan, Canada and the WWF. Unlike Mick and Chris, Dynamite doesn't have any ties to the business and isn't shy about expressing his true feelings on people, which makes his story even more compelling.

4. Bodyslams! Memoirs of a Wrestling Pitchman - Gary Michael Capetta

Younger fans may not know him, but GMC was one of the top ring announcers from the mid 70's to mid 90's. He went through the WWWF to the WWF's national expansion to the AWA, to WCW. Like Tom, Gary wasn't associated with any companies at the time and expressed his true feelings on the bigwigs and wrestlers in an engaging way.

5. Tangled Ropes - Superstar Billy Graham

Billy had an interesting life even before entering the world of wrestling. Starting off as a bodybuilder, than as a traveling evangelical Christian before befriending Dr. Jerry Graham and becoming his "brother".

Also recommended: Adam Copeland on Edge, The Hardy Boys - Exist to Inspire, Terry Funk - More Than Just Hardcore

Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling by Bret Hart is alright. Bret paints vivid pictures with his recollections but there's a melancholy tone that runs throughout the book. Worth checking out if you're a fan of his.

Walking a Golden Mile by William Regal is a dry read at times but there's some good anecdotes. The story of Regal in an Indian strip club might be worth the money by itself.

Are there any books I've missed out on? Feel free to leave any recommendations.

  1. I forgot to mention To Be the Man by Ric Flair. It's a good fun read and has a lot of interviews to support Ric's stories.
