Handsome British lad Jack O'Connell, (best known from Unbroken) stars as Eric Love. He's a violent young offender sent to adult prison aged 19, hence the title "Starred Up".
Early in the movie, Eric snaps and beats up a fellow prisoner over a simple misunderstanding. Realizing he's in big trouble, Eric douses himself in oil and prepares for a fight.
Eric is too slippery for the officers and manages to get himself a hostage.
The Deputy Governor assures him he'll be treated fairly but they cuff and drag him away.
Eric finds an opening when there's a distraction and takes another officer by the balls, literally.
Eric is threatened with a baton but the prison therapist, Oliver (Rupert Friend), steps forward and diffuses the situation. His role as Eric's protector is established immediately.
