An Interview with Robert Foley - Part 1

It's my honor and privilege to interview Robert Foley. Robert is the man behind the Random Knockout of the Day blog and it quickly becomes clear that he has a unique perspective on underground wrestling.

---------------

Hello Robert, thank you for your time... So you've mentioned that your father is Irish-American but you live in The Netherlands. I'm just curious, were you born in The Netherlands or were you born overseas?

I was born in The Netherlands! I did go to the US once to meet family there, but the connection was never that strong. I haven't seen them since my Dad passed in 2018.

Is there much of a pro wrestling scene in The Netherlands? I know Malakai Black is Dutch, but I can't think of anyone else.

Not that I'm aware of!

How did you become a pro wrestling fan? Who were your favorites from the early days?

I never really considered myself a pro wrestling fan. But when I first came across it on TV as a teen, there was definitely a fascination with the buff men taking each other on in skimpy trunks. I know I watched Batista and Randy Orton. As a kid I just liked the guys with the big muscles who showed the most skin. Especially when they were on the losing end. Also a very vivid memory is of Kurt Angle who got knocked out and his head shaved while he was unconscious - an early sign of my specific interest.

Did you wrestle at all when you were younger, for sport or recreation?

I really didn't! I was always preoccupied with watching. I sometimes wonder if I would be good at it myself. Like most Dutch men I am quite tall (6'3''/190cm) and I'm in an OK shape, it just looks like something that requires a lot of stamina!

Were you a fan of wrestling magazines? Personally, they were a big part of my fandom back in the day.

I must admit I never saw these in the Netherlands when I was young. If I did, I probably would be too embarrassed to buy one!

Was there a specific moment when you realized you were turned on by wrestling?

I don't know if this is relatable, but in hindsight it's clear I was watching certain things on TV because I thought it was sexy. At the time I didn't realize that, or would deny it to myself. That makes it hard to define a specific moment as it was a very gradual realization for me.

Mark Wolff bearhugs Billy Herrington - Can-Am

How did you discover underground wrestling, do you remember your first video? Who were your favorites from the early days?

I probably stumbled upon a video online somewhere. Billy Herrington getting knocked out in a lockerroom while nude by someone smaller was likely the first video. But I'm not sure that counts, as I think it was more part of a porn plot than underground wrestling.
It's hard to remember the very first underground video I stumbled across. It may have been Doug Warren vs Corey Turner* (such a sexy knockout!), or something with Wade Cutler that got me to the BGEast website. When I first got there I'm sure I spent an entire weekend looking at matches! I also remember being into HBWL. But it's hard to tell what came first.
Wade Cutler, young Braden Charron and beefy, older Christopher Bruce were my first favorites on BGEast.

*There's no record of a Corey Turner at BG East, but there is a match between Doug Warren and Corey Hayden, see the photo below.

Your blog Random Knockout of the Day focuses on wrestlers knocked out, do you have a favorite knockout move?

It's a classic, but the sleeperhold. It gives the viewer the best view of the loser gradually fading into unconsciousness. Though a surprise impact move that ends a match before you can say "sleepy time", does have a nice shock effect as well.

What are your thoughts on "squash" matches? People tend to love them or hate them.

I usually love them. Squash matches sometimes have multiple knockouts, which is obviously a hit with me. It does depend on the selling though. I enjoy them more when the squashee is the bigger guy, or the more experienced/mature guy. Something about flipped power dynamics I enjoy.

This is the end of Part 1. In Part 2, I ask Rob about his blogs (he also has a blog of erotic stories),Wrestlingmale, Film 911 and other underground wrestling topics.
