As an 80's kid I grew up watching the Superman movies.
The first film in particular stands out as a work of art. The casting, photography, music, set design, editing and special effects (for the time) were top notch. The script is variable but the actors make the best of it.
In my opinion, no one else has brought such heart and charm to the Superman character as Christopher Reeve. To me, he is the definitive Superman.

Yes. The kryptonite necklace scene is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting, I love Reeve as Superman, but not as Clark Kent. Since he grew up as Clark, it doesn't make sense to me that Superman is the real guy and not the mask. I prefer the Dean Cain or Tom Welling approach where Clark is more of a real person and less of a clown.
You make a very good point, Alex. Reeve's performance as Clark was overly goofy at times. I would argue that Superman is who he really is and Clark is just the mask he wears in public. I think Reeve played Clark better in Superman II, particularly the Richard Donner Cut, when he's dealing with more serious issues.
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't catch much of the Dean Cain series so I can't compare them other than appearance in which Reeve wins, I think. I agree Tom Welling was great. Thanks for commenting!
